What is Contraflow?

Contraflow lane reversal refers to plans that alter the normal flow of traffic, typically on a controlled-access highway (such as a freeway or motorway), to aid in an emergency evacuation.Blue signs are posted to guide drivers to hurricane evacuation routes. When evacuation must occur quickly, the Governor may order all lanes of traffic on both sides an interstate to move in the same direction. This plan is called Contraflow or reverse laning. The direction of reverse laning would depend on the emergency.

Evacuation Tips

1  Before leaving, fill your vehicle with fuel.

2. Expect traffic during evacuations to be slow moving.

3. Use service areas and rest areas for brief stops.

4. State law requires that travel lanes be kept clear.

All vehicles involved in crashes should be moved from travel lanes as quickly as possible.
